Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Treatment in Honolulu, HI

Regenerative Medicine & Rehabilitation of Honolulu uses treatments like platelet rich plasma (PRP), which contains growth factors that stimulate the healing process on a cellular level. These cells are derived from the body’s own supply of platelets through a blood sample. After being properly isolated, these cells can then be precisely delivered to areas of injury to nurture the healing process through natural, bioactive proteins. We use live digital imaging to carefully deliver all injections.

There are distinct benefits to platelet rich plasma treatment over steroid injections and surgery:

PLATELET RICH PLASMA (PRP)

Mechanism: Nurture the healing process by delivering growth factors & cytokines to repair injured tissues
Risks: Autologous (your own cells) so likelihood of rejection or infection are low
Downtime: Minimal
Indication:
・Mild to moderate arthritis of joints, knees, shoulders or hips
・Connective tissue: Tendon/ligament/muscle injury/damage
Invasiveness: Minimal
Location: Office-based
Limitations: Little to none for otherwise healthy patients
Not recommended for patients with a history of cancer, autoimmune disease, or bleeding disorders

STEM CELLS

Mechanism: Once activated, release proteins and cytokines to stimulate tissue repair and growth
Risks: Autologous (risk of infection or rejection are low). Cells must be obtained from the bone marrow or from adipose (via liposuction procedure)
Downtime: Minimal
Indication:
・Mild to moderate arthritis of joints, knees, shoulders or hips
・Connective tissue: tendon/ligament/muscle injury or damage
Location: office based
Limitations: little to none for otherwise health patients
Not recommended for patients with a history of cancer, autoimmune disease or bleeding disorder

STEROID INJECTIONS (PREDNISONE, METHYLPREDNISOLONE, KENALOG/TRIAMCINOLONE)

Mechanism: Reduce inflammation
Risks:
・Reduced immune response (increased chance of infection), damage to chondrocytes/synoviocytes with chronic use, elevated blood sugar
・Steroids weaken Tendons/ligaments, increased likelihood of tears and/or rupture
・Steroids are cytotoxic to chondrocytes (destructive to the cells that compose the cartilage that lines the joints)
・Steroids are cytotoxic to synoviocytes (destructive to cells in your joints that make the lubrication fluid that helps the joint move smoothly)
・Steroid injections have potential to cause crystalline deposits to form in the joint
Downtime: Minimal
Indication: Inflammation or swelling
Invasiveness: Minimal
Location: Office-based
Limitations: Riskier for patients with history of infection; risk of tendon and ligament rupture, cartilage damage, and increased blood sugar for diabetic patients

SURGERY

Mechanism: Remove, reconstruct, or replace
Risks: Post-operative pain, infection/hemorrhage, prosthesis failure
Downtime: Weeks to months, depending on the surgery
Indication: Advanced and more severe joint arthritis of the shoulder, hip or knee; shoulder, elbow or achilles tendonitis that fails to improve despite conservative (non-surgical) treatments
Invasiveness: High
Location: Operating room
Limitations: Pre-operative clearance required from internist/primary care physician
